Walnut Creek: Some Helpful Information

By Madeleine Glazier

There are many reasons why people choose to live in the Northern California city of Walnut Creek. This suburban gem boasts beautiful homes, plenty of activities, good schools and close access to Oakland and San Francisco, which are just 16 and 21 miles away respectively. While close to the city, Walnut Creek definitely has the small-town feel that many people crave, so if you are thinking about settling in this town, here are a few bits of information that might be helpful.

If you have children, you probably are concerned about the schools in the area. There are five different school districts that serve students who live in Walnut Creek. There are also a dozen or more private schools. These private schools include several kindergarten through sixth or eight grade schools, as well as one K-12 private school and a private high school offering grades 9-12 only. Among the public schools, the Walnut Creek School District has five elementary schools and one intermediate school.

High schoolers either attend Las Lomas High School, which is located in Walnut Creek, but part of the Acalanes Union High School District, or Northgate High School. The latter also is located in Walnut Creek but is part of the Mount Diablo Unified School District, which serves students in this town as well as Concord, Pleasant Hill, Clayton, Lafayette and several nearby towns and unincorporated areas. Las Lomas is a National Blue Ribbon School, and Northgate High School is a California Distinguished School.

In addition to a myriad of sports leagues featuring everything from soccer to swimming to basketball, the town's many parks and wilderness areas provide plenty of fun outdoor adventures for kids of all ages. The city itself offers many low-cost classes for children from preschool age to teenagers. This includes art classes, cooking classes, swimming lessons and even summer camps. There is also a wildlife museum in Walnut Creek where children can learn some local natural history.

Walnut Creek is not just a great place for families with children; it actually has been listed as one of the best places in the country to retire. The town offers a huge assortment of outdoor activities, and the mild climate is perfect for those who love to be outside. With less than 20 inches of rainfall per year, you can enjoy the hiking trails, biking trails and more than 20 parks almost every day of the year. In addition, there are high-end retail shops, many restaurants and cafes and plenty of cultural offerings including the California Symphony, the Festival Opera and the huge Bedford Gallery.
