Using Recycled Tires For A Flower Bed

By George Dodson

Anyone who wants to save on fruit and vegetables should do like maybe their parents did and grow their own. It is not difficult to do it and not at all costly. There is nothing quite like fresh taste from your own garden. A herb garden is something you can try as well. The taste of your own produce is far better than that available in store. Added to this is the glow of producing your own food. Finally, you control what goes into it. You know it is fresh, natural, and without preservatives.

Lots of people just dont have the space for lots of fruit and vegetable growing. For that reason, they need an alternative. Planting a garden in a range of small spaces may be an answer. This works because you can plant, harvest, and plant again during the season and still have enough for your personal needs. Try planting in old tires, it can really work.

Old tires are available free at many outlets. In some cases, they might cost 5 bucks with tire discounts. On average all you will need is maybe four or five for a good bit of planting. Large jobs will obviously need a lot more, maybe double the amount.

To some people the old tires may not look so good. What will the neighbors think? There are ways of dressing them up by covering them with something that looks much better. Setting the tires in some wooden boxes would make them look better. You can cut them up to form patterns such as pedals on a flower, and paint them on the outside to make them look better. The rims of the tires could be used as a stand.

Dig down to a depth of 4inches to prepare the soil, once you have decided on a suitable spot. The roots of plants need to grow as deep as possible to be healthy. Get some good potting soil/compost. A local store, Home Depot or a Lowes will stock this. Make sure you fertilize it properly and then plant your seeds according to the instructions. Dont over water, but do water regularly. You will have a small but adequate garden that will fulfill your needs very well. Growing your own produce instead of buying it will save you money.
