Moroccan Style Living Room

By Darren Hartley

A Moroccan style living room is defined by vibrant colors and exquisite furnishings. A distinctive metal lantern above the centre table casts soft, interesting shadows throughout the space. An extravagant desert tent is created by draping jewel-toned fabrics loosely over the walls. Such decorations add a Moroccan flavour to the living space.

There is no limit to the attention given to detail when it comes to a exotic Moroccan style living room. Plaster ceilings are embellished with an amber chandelier and Moorish symbols. Finishing touches is what Moroccan interior design is all about. Every light fixture, every tile is each given appropriate attention.

A Moroccan style living room features an intricacy in its tile work, which is a distinct characteristic in its design. However, for homeowners on a budget, an inexpensive and DIY-friendly alternative to zillij-inspired tiles are stencils. A graphic pattern stencilled in black can transform a simple white fireplace surround into a striking focal point.

A Moroccan style living room can do very well with a bit of glitz. Often used as decorative accents in Moroccan homes are Moroccan wedding blankets, traditionally woven from sheep's wool, cotton and linen by female relatives of the bride before a wedding. These blankets are typically neutral in color and embellished with hundreds of mirrored sequins.

A Moroccan style living room also draws from nature. The color palette of a master suite draws inspiration from an antique rug. Evocative of the adjacent Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, blue has always been the prevalent color in Moroccan interiors.

The design of a Moroccan style living room doesn't stop at the walls. The ceilings are often painted and stencilled with elaborate designs, giving the room an overhead opulence. After a ceiling is brilliantly painted, it is adorned with arabesque and geometric shapes commonly found in Moroccan architecture. Such decorations convert the living space into an African-inspired gallery.
