Beauty Of Stamped Concrete Exceeds Expectations

By Anita Ortega

Concrete is no longer limited to the pale gray driveway. A plain surface may be suitable for large parking lots or walkways. However, decorative stamped concrete can beautify any driveway or patio in the city of Yelm WA.

Using one of the many stamped patterns, a homeowner can match the patio to a retaining wall or sidewalk. The look of wood, brick or stone can be embellished with one of numerous colors. The process not only makes it look good, it makes it more long-lasting.

Forms are used to press a pattern into the surface following the pour while it is still wet. The construction company must have a number of employees on hand to take the pattern off before that surface can dry completely. Color can be added both before and after the concrete is poured.

There are different measures of flour and baking soda used in a cake mix. Concrete is also a mixture. It includes various measures of cement, water and colorants.

Granite and marble are two of the high priced materials that can be imitated using this technique. The stamped costs more than the plain. However, the cost is minimal compared to the cost of actual granite or marble.

There are intricate details that may be used to make the decorative imitation granite or marble. When used to pour a driveway or sidewalk, it serves the same purpose as plain gray. However, just because it is also practical, it still has aesthetic value.

The popularity of this detailing and stamping can be used to do home improvements inside the home too. It is more expensive than plain surfaces, but less costly than marble or granite. It is considerably lighter in weight also, making it easier to handle.

The possibilities are limited only by the imagination of the homeowner. Stamping molds can be made in any shape and pattern. The most intricate patterns will combine stamping with acid staining and use of other additives.

The stamping technique that started in the 1950s was limited in style and color. As the use spread, the selection grew. The use increased over time.

By the time the 1970s arrived, the choices of colors, patterns and finishes had widened. The selection attracted more widespread usage. The economic advantages only served to propel its increased use.

A base color is used to imitate the natural color of the marble or granite it is simulating. When the color is added to the mix before pouring, it is referred to as integral color. When it is added to the surface it is referred to as cast on color.

A color hardener that is cast on can be done in a variety of ways. After a base color is added, a secondary color gives the texture that makes the surface so attractive. The process is called color release.

It is cast on top in a powder. It can also be sprayed in the stamping patterns to make contact with the wet concrete before it dries.

The entire procedure can be used not only on new applications, but, as a finish to existing surfaces. It is affordable for most homeowners. It is economical enough to be used on larger commercial projects as well.
